Sony Playstation 3 Flying High With US Air Force

Why would you think that US Air Force has ordered a heap of Sony Playstation 3 consoles? Are they trying to master simulation games to train their pilots or something? Or they just want the crew to chill out with the best gaming experience? No. US Air Force just like many other organizations have realized the true potential of Playstation’s cell processor.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center recently used PS3 cell processor’s to find out codes to de-crypt hidden files to aid in several key court cases. Just an example to prove how useful a gaming console could be. Well, not just any, its Sony PS3
.

US Air Force has bought a consignment of 2200 PS3s in addition to an existing 336 to further reinforce their research labs. The previous 336 PS3 have been used in various projects like Neuromorphic Computing, High Definition Video image processing and Back Projection Synthetic Aperture Radar Imager formation. This new consignment of PS3 cell processors will be used in researching Advanced Computing Architectures and High Performance Embedded Computing concepts.

It’s not because the Air Force couldn’t find anything better that’s why they choose PS3. It’s the cost that’s deciding factor..A single 3.2 GHz cell processor, which comes for around $8k, can deliver over 200 gigaflops, whereas the Sony PS3 cell processor delivers approximately 150 gigaflops and costs $600. This cost difference alone makes PS3 a worthy option and when it comes to Sony brand name’s quality record, it becomes an automatic winner.
